But also, I'm certain that He was seeking to make a statement to the people, which the Pharisees immediately caught. And so Jesus was doing first things first. The greatest miracle that God can work in any of our lives is that miracle of freeing us from the power of sin and transforming us into the kingdom of light. Salvation is by far the greatest need that any of us have. Better to go into heaven maimed than whole into hell. What is really the most important thing? A person's salvation, or a person's healing? And in reality, we realize that the most important thing for any man is his salvation. We brought him to get healed." But Jesus is taking care of the most important thing first. Now, I imagine at this point these four friends were very disappointed. When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee ( Mark 2:5 ). And as Jesus is sitting there talking, suddenly here comes this guy on a pallet down in front of Him. Not being able to get near the house, they probably went around back, climbed up on the roof, hoisted the guy up and began to tear off the tiles, or whatever it was. And here came four fellows carrying a friend who was sick with the palsy. You couldn't even get near the door because of the multitude of people. So, Jesus was sitting there in the house. And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay ( Mark 2:3-4 ). But, oh, how important that we just preach the word.Īnd they come unto him, bringing one sick of the palsy, which was borne of four. Experience often preached, wild experiences. "He preached the word unto them." What else is there to preach? Well, all you have to do is listen to television and the radio, and you'll find there's a lot of things being preached. So, word went around Jesus is in the house over there.Īnd straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door: and he preached the word unto them ( Mark 2:2 ). Thus, if certain exceptions are noted, it may still be appropriate to understand the old wineskins as John’s disciples.Īnd again he entered into Capernaum after some days and it was noised that he was in the house ( Mark 2:1 ). "No man having drunk old wine desireth new for he saith, The old is good" (Luke 5:39). However, the majority seem not to have done so and the reluctance of many of John’s disciples to follow Jesus would appear to be the primary meaning of the third phase of this triple reply. To understand this to mean that Jesus would not put his new teaching into John’s disciples violates the fact that some of John’s disciples became apostles of Christ (John 1:35). The application of this has been understood to mean that Jesus’ new teaching could not be put into John’s disciples but it seems preferable to make the forms, ceremonies, and ordinances of Judaism to be the old wineskins and Jesus’ new teachings could not be subordinated to and synchronized with such things as Jewish fasts. However, if new wine was put into old skins (hardened and no longer elastic), the fermentation process would burst them, resulting in the loss of both the wine and the wineskins. Skins of animals were used in those times for containing liquids and, in the case of wine, if new, the process of fermentation increased the volume which was compensated for by the elasticity of the new skins. Yet the Pharisees preferred their old worn out religion ( Luke 5:39).Īnd no man putteth new wine into old wine-skins: else the wine will burst the skins, and the wine perisheth, and the skins: but they put new wine into fresh wine-skins. Judaism was like an old worn out coat that could not be mended it was like a brittle old wineskin that could not stand the pressure of new wine ( Mark 2:21-22 Luke 5:36-38). Jesus brought something that was entirely new. He had not come to repair, improve or update Judaism. Jesus reminded his hearers that, now that he had come, they should not expect to continue the old traditions of the Jewish religion. Their sorrow, however, would be turned into joy, because Jesus would rise from death victoriously ( Mark 2:18-20 Luke 5:33-35). But Jesus would be taken away from them and killed, and then they would fast because of their great sorrow. In a time of such joy no one thinks of fasting, and therefore Jesus’ disciples did not fast while he was with them. The coming of Jesus may be compared to the coming of a bridegroom to his wedding feast. Their traditional ceremonies and fastings were now of no use. Why Jesus’ disciples did not fast ( Matthew 9:14-17 Mark 2:18-22 Luke 5:33-39 )īoth John the Baptist’s disciples and the Pharisees were slow to realize that Jesus’ coming had brought in a new era.
